How to Teach an Old Dress New Tricks

I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who read, shared, commented on or tweeted about Friday's post. I debated for a while about whether or not I should post it and your support confirmed that I made the right decision.

I've been thinking alot lately about new ways to wear dresses. Vests? Scarves? Layering shirts over? Lots of ideas, but I just can't seem to break out of my cardigan+ necklace and maybe a belt rut. So here you have it. A dress with a necklace and a cardigan.

This dress is one of my favorites. I love the cobalt blue, it's a super soft, but still thick jersey fabric, it's stretchy and a-line so it always fits, and it's great for layering. (Also seen here and here). I can already tell I'm going to get a lot of mileage out of this printed cardigan. In fact, I've been eyeing some printed cardigans at Old Navy that will be great for fall, but I'm waiting for them to go on sale.

Outfit:
Dress: old
Cardigan: Target
Necklace: thrifted (buffalo exchange)
Sandals: Payless.

What are your tips for wearing dresses in new and inventive ways?

  1. A lot of knit dresses can be worn backwards :)
You can wear the exact same dress, with a cardi to disguise the fact that your wearing you dress backwards, and have a completely different neckline!
Another option is wearing a skirt over your dress, so that the dress becomes a tucked in blouse (works well with thinner fabrics).
Or layer a thin tee (any sleeve length) under your dress instead of a cami. This looks especially good with a striped tee and a floral dress, I think.

  4. Your colorful cardi is so cute! I've been trying to remix my dresses too. I think I'm going to get some summer scarves and wear them with my dresses :)And maybe some new colorful skinny belts too.

  5. First off, I love the way this looks. That cardi is fabulous.

Second, I also struggle with styling dresses. In the spring & fall it isn't as hard because there are more layering options, but in summer, I never know what to do!

  7. I just read your Friday post, and I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Its horrible!

Not horrible, however, is how you look in cobalt. You look gorgeous; it's definitely your color!

  8. Pretty color on you girl! I almost never wear my dresses just as a dress. But I am nuts so that's that. Anyways. I think a button up over a dress works well if you tie it at the end or even cinch it with a belt. Or you could belt a scarf over the dress. You could also try a blazer over the dress a la Kristen Wigg in Bridesmaids. Just a few ideas!

  9. I'd have to agree with you, dresses can be so hard! It's fun to wear a cute little dress all on it's own, but it's exciting when you can think of new ways to wear it. (I like the cardis over the dresses, I think it's a cute signature look of yours.) I always go for a button up over a dress, it's amazing what a few great buttons ups can do for your wardrobe. Summer time and all of its glorious heat can make this tricky, but sleeveless button ups work pretty well. (And a really great tee shirt! Those striped-tees they have at old navy right now are so great for this.)
I think you remixed this cardigan so well, that print is so fantastic and bright and eye-catching!
