Buttons and Cameras

This outfit is pretty representative of what I've been wearing to work lately. With temperatures mostly below freezing I've been choosing warmth over style.

I've really discovered the beauty of button down shirts this winter. In the past I've had trouble with fit on button downs. It's hard to find one that fits over my hips and boobs, but isn't too baggy in the shoulders or waist. Thankfully, I've  found two flannel shirts and this chambray shirt that fit pretty well, and I've been wearing them constantly.

Outfit:  Pants- Forever 21; Shirt- Old Navy similar at Macy's; Boots- Me too; Cardigan- Target  similar at Old Navy

I've about had it with my camera. I've been thinking about/ lusting after a DSLR. However, I really don't want to invest a ridiculous amount of money in a camera right now and I don't actually know very much about photography. I'm leaning towards skipping the DSLR for now and upgrading to a nicer point and shoot.

Before I make the purchase, I wanted to reach out to y'all for suggestions. What type of camera do you use? Any suggestions for a user friendly camera that takes beautiful pictures?

  1. I think I would skip on upgrading your point and shoot and save that money towards a DSLR. Your pictures seem fine and I think you'll be happier if you wait it out and get something you really love. I know Best Buy and Target often run ads and do sales on their cameras, so if you keep your eye out you can probably find a great deal! Good luck :)

Also, I have those pants and wish I had that top to pair with them!

  2. You look so cute, I love the dark red/burgundy pants. So for a camera... have you considered buying a used one? That's what we did. There is a really good used camera shop in Newton. Just another option for you!

  5. The polka dot button down is so cute! I don't have a DSLR but I do hope to get one eventually if I can save that big chunk of change :)

    1. So much money! I could end up spending more on a camera than I did on my computer!

  6. I have no input on the camera, but I completely hear you on the button-downs...I don't have any, because they all fit me so badly. One of my wardrobe goals this year is to find (or make, or alter) some button-downs that fit.

    1. They're such a difficult clothing item! Right up there with pants in difficulty of fit.

  7. I agree that maybe a used camera might be the way to go, if you can find something you like. I use a Nikon L-110 and I really like it. I know a DSLR would take better pictures, but the Nikon works for my purposes; I'm not a photographer so I don't need a photographer's camera.

I love the color of those pants on you and am so glad you've found button-downs that work. I just finally found one that works for me last weekend. I'm hoping to find a couple more.

    1. Your pictures look great, so maybe a point and shoot will do! I'm also not a photographer, but I wonder if I would get into photography if I had a nice camera to play with.

  9. I have the same button down shirt & I love it! I made the leap & bought a DSLR last Spring & I dont regret it at all! Having the DSLR has helped me to discover so much about photography. I have a Canon Rebel T3 and I use a 50mm lens for blog posts. I paid $548(incl taxes) for the base & 18-55mm kit lens.

    1. I've been eyeing a DSLR that is about $450 with the 18-55mm lens included. It's just so hard to make that leap when I could buy a really nice point and shoot for under $150!

  10. Talk about finding clothes that fits, I always have problems with pants. They normally fits my waist but kill my thighs (thunder thigh gene) OR they fit my thighs but loose at the waist! So I always end up altering! You look good in those pants anyway, the color is beautiful!

    1. I am right there with you! I've got wide hips and thicker thighs, so most of the time I have to size up with pants and wear a belt.

  11. Yes warmth is important. This morning while waiting for the commuter train with the snow and the wind a girl walked down the platform wearing a short red coat or one that went to right below her hips, BARE legs, gladiator high heel sandals and what ever she was wearing underneath was so short you could not see below her coat and no hat, scarf, or gloves. It takes a lot to turn the heads of New Yorkers but everyone was like what?? Good lord!

  12. Ugh, buttons up are such a pain. (I hate the gaping buttons, and like you mentions, trying to find a shirt that fits through the chest and shoulders but isn't really bagging through the waist.) I do really like it with the burgundy cords, that's such a cute cold weather look!

As for the camera, it really, really depends on where you want to go with your photography. I knew I wanted to work more with the photography element on my blog and I wanted to improve my personal photography so I saved up for a dslr. (I got lucky, I got a slightly older model, it's a cannon Rebel T1, it went to clearance and I ended up getting it and the 18-55 lens for $300. Ebay and used camera shops are a great place for nicer cameras at a better price but I would personally skip getting the kit with the 18-55 lens and get the regular camera and buy the 50mm f/1.8 lens, I'm not a fan of the 18-55mm lens, the 50mm f/1.8 does an amazing job for outfit and regular photography and it's pretty reasonable for a lens, about $100. The price of just the cannon camera goes down as well then, I think you can get them new without the 18-55 lens for about $300 and with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, it ends up being about $400 in all, so close to what the sale kit would add up to. But you can probably find it all cheaper on ebay, I saw a few older cannons going for about $200 and some of the used lens go for between $60-80. Whew, sorry, that was a bit much!) In all though, I think I really depends on what YOU want to do. My dad uses a cannon power shot now and he takes amazing pictures with it. The price between a really good digital and a dslr isn't that far, it really matters where you want to go with your photography and what you think you would get the most enjoyment out of.

Um, sorry about writing a novel there. :P I went through a lot of the same thing trying to decide if I wanted to upgrade and if it was really that important and then i spent month researching and pricing camera. (I wish I'd spent some of that time learning how to use a dslr, they are a little tricky!) Good luck with all of this, I hope you end up getting what you really want!

  13. That top is so cute and I love it layered under the cardigan. :) As for the camera, I love photography, so I went with the DSLR. But honestly, it's more about the lens than the camera. If you can buy an inexpensive body like a Nikon D40 or D60 used, then you can save up and get a nice lens like the 50mm 1.8. I got my Nikon D60 from a woman on craigslist for super cheap and then saved up for a few months to get a good lens. But I know that Canon and Nikon make great point and shoots now. Good luck with whatever you choose! <3

  14. Button down shirts are my jam - and a great look on you too! I don't have any knowledge on point-and-shoot cameras, but I do LOVE my DSLR and think it is a great investment. Maybe you could look for a local camera shop that sells refurbished ones?

  15. I always hated button downs before the blog, and now I love them. go figure. but it's true, they aren't always the most flattering to a curvy girl on their own - with a little layering they can go a long way.
